DHL aims to change the face of logistics industry in the GCC

Jan 24, 2018

DHL, the leading express logistics company with a global presence, is exploring new avenues to turn innovations in the logistics industry into breakthroughs in the world of transportation. The company is optimistic that with some ingenuity, it can tweak technological advancement in the logistics industry to change the face of transportation in the Middle East and the rest of the world.

DHL recently conducted a successful trial of the DHL Parcelcopter, a transport drone that delivers packages to people’s doorsteps on its own, requiring minimal human intervention. This marked the first time in the history of logistics industry when a parcelcopter was directly integrated into the delivery chain of a parcel service provider.

The company also tested two of its new collaborative robots called “Sawyer” and “Baxter”. Both these robots are optimized to help DHL’s warehouse staff to perform packaging and other value-added tasks with heightened efficiency.

Additionally, the express logistics giant is also playing a key role in the development of Delft Hyperloop, a futuristic capsule designed by TU Delft with the vision of introducing a rapid mode of transportation for people and goods.

DHL was assigned with the responsibility of transporting a prototype of the capsule, stored in a specially designed flight case. The onus of cross-border shipping of the original capsule was also on DHL owing to its rich experience with customs and air cargo regulations.

Markus Kückelhaus, Vice President of innovation and trend research at DHL, recently visited Dubai to discuss how the company is looking to enhance its business through potentially revolutionary projects that aim to change the way transportation sector is viewed.

“Artificial Intelligence, virtual reality, and automation are driving intelligent supply chains and transforming the future of the global logistics industry,” he said.
